Abstract:

In a time when audiences have daily access to news about violent crime, to comments of supposed specialists who scrutinize police investigations and to series like ‘CSI’ or ‘Dexter’, there is a growing public interest for the area of legal medicine and forensic sciences. This interest, however, has not yet been accompanied by a serious consideration about the models and strategies of communication used by the entities recognized as experts on the subject – in the Portuguese case, the Portuguese National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF).
Using INMLCF as the privileged field of research for a case study and focusing the observation on the last six years, this investigation aims to characterize not only the relationship between the public and forensic sciences, but also to indentify and analyze the communication model used by the institution, to verify if the strategies are used deliberately and to understand in what way, in its point of view, do they affect the public. Finally, it was a purpose of this endeavor to suggest to INMLCF some goals and actions to apply in the contact with the media.
